Today’s encryption debate is based on fiction and fear. Americans are worried about terrorism and crime, and the potential for the Internet to help them spread. Encryption has become an easy target. Politicians make a simple argument: less encryption means more safety. But this argument is misleading and wrong – and we cannot create smart policy without a basic understanding of how Internet security works.

The Copia Institute, via our Techdirt blog and with help from Beacon, is crowdfunding an ongoing project to report on the encryption debate and bring facts, not fear to the discussion.
